Evidence linking weak electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to leukaemia and other cancers has been fast accumulating in recent years [1-3] ( Electromagnetic Fields Double Leukemia Risks , Mobile Phones & Cancer , SiS 18; Electromagnetic Fields, Leukaemia and DNA Damage , SiS 24). Such non-thermal' effects of EMR due to levels well below that sufficient to bring about any heating - have been observed even before World War II [4] ( Non-Thermal Effects , SiS 17).
During the cold war period, a four-fold excess of cancer cases was diagnosed among the staff of the American Embassy in Moscow that had been secretly irradiated with microwaves at well below the threshold set in current guidelines. The US State Department study on this episode was described in a paper published in 1997 [5]. This was among the earliest evidence for non-thermal effects of microwaves, and many studies are now confirming the high cancer risks of people exposed to microwaves from mobile phone base stations and transmitters around the world. Microwaves are no different from EMRs in the lower frequency range in that respect; except that microwaves may be even more potent in promoting cancer and other illnesses [6] ( Drowning in a Sea of Microwaves, the Wi-Fi Revolution , SiS 34).
Ten year study in a German city found cancer risk trebled In June 1993, a GSM transmitter antenna was set up in the Southern Germany city of Naila, and became operational since September 1993. The transmitter antenna has a power of 15dbW (31.6W) per channel in the 935 MHz range. In December 1997, an installation from another company was added.
Several doctors living in Naila decided to respond to the call by Wolfram König, President of the Federal Agency for Radiation Protection, to collaborate in assessing the risk posed by mobile phone radiation. They carried out a study to examine whether people living close to transmitter antennas had increased risk of cancer [7].
They found that the proportion of newly developed cancer cases was significantly higher among those who had lived during the past ten years at a distance of up to 400m from the cellular transmitter site, compared to those living further away, and the patients fell ill on average 8 years earlier. In the years 1999-2004, five years after the transmitter has been installed and operating, the relative risk of getting cancer had trebled for the residents within 400 m of the installation compared to inhabitants outside the area.
For the purpose of the study, an inner and an outer area were defined. The inner area covered the land within a distance of 400 m from the transmitter, the outer area comprise land further than 400 m. In the inner area, additional emissions come from the secondary lobes of the transmitter. Thus, the outer area has significantly reduced radiation intensity. Computer simulation and measurements both show that radiation in the inner area is 100 times higher compared to outer area. The measurements of all transmitter stations show that the intensity of radiation from the cell phone transmitter station in Naila in the inner area was higher than the electromagnetic fields from radio, television, or radar, according to measurements made in previous studies.
Data gathered from nearly 1 000 patients covered almost 90 percent of the local residents, and all patients had been living during the entire observation period of 10 years at the same address. The social differences are small, there is no ethnic diversity, no heavy industry and in the inner area there are neither high voltage cable nor electric trains. The average ages of the residents are similar in the inner and outer areas.
For the entire period from 1994 to 2004, the odds ratio (OR) for getting cancer in the inner, strongly exposed area compared to the outer area was 2.35. The average age of developing cancer was 64.1 years in the inner area, whereas in the outer area it was 72.6 years, a difference of 8.5 years. The average for Germany as a whole for developing cancer is 66.5 years, among men, 66 and women 67.
The new cancer cases showed a high annual constant value. Considering only the first 5 years, there was no significant increased risk of getting cancer in the inner area. However, for the period 1999 to 2004, the OR for getting cancer was 3.38 in the inner area compared to the outer area. Breast cancer topped the list, with an average age of 50.8 year compared with 69.9 years in the outer area, but cancers of the prostate, pancreas, bowel, skin melanoma, lung and blood cancer were all increased
Four fold cancer risk in Israel Researchers from Tel-Aviv University, Israel, compared 622 people living near a cell-phone transmitter station for 3-7 years who were patients of one health clinic in Netanya, with 1 222 controls who get their medical services in a clinic located nearby, with very closely matched environment, workplace and occupational characteristics [8]. The exposure to mobile phone radiation began one year before the start of the study.
The cell-phone transmitter came into service in July 1996, and people in the first health clinic live within a half circle of 350 m radius from the transmitter. The antenna has a total maximum transmission power of 1 500 W at 850 MHz, with a 50 Hz modulation. Both the measured and the predicted power density in the whole exposed area were far below 5.3 mW/m 2 , and hence far below the current guidelines.
There were 8 cases of different kinds of cancer diagnosed in a period of just one year (July 1997 to June 1998): 3 cases of breast cancer, one of ovarian cancer, lung cancer, Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymphatic system), osteoid osteoma (bone tumour) and kidney cancer. This compares with 31 cases per 10 000 a year in the general population of Israel, and 2 per 1 222 in the matched controls of the nearby clinic.
The relative risk of cancer was 4.15 for those living near the cell-phone transmitter compared with the entire population of Israel. As seven out of eight cancer cases were women, the relative cancer rates for females were 10.5 for those living near the transmitter station and 0.6 for the controls relative for the whole town of Netanya
One year after the close of the study, 8 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the microwave exposed area and two in the control area.
Mobile phone use in Sweden Sweden has a long history of mobile phone use in a relatively uniform population, which is ideal for studying the health impacts of exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
Analogue phones operating at 450 MHz were introduced in Sweden in 1981, and was at first used only in the car with fixed external antenna. Portable analogue 450 MHz phones were introduced in 1984, and analogue 900 MHz phones came into use between 1986 and 2000 [9].
The digital system GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) started in 1991 and has increased sharply in recent years to become the most common phone type. This system uses dual band, 900 and 1800 MHz. From 2003, the third generation of mobile phones, 3G or UMTs (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) started operating in Sweden at 1 900 MHz.
Desktop cordless phones also depend on wireless technology. The 800-900 MHz analogue system was introduced in 1988, and digital cordless telephones (DECT) that operate at 1900 MHz have been in use since 1991.
The Nordic radiation protection authorities as well as the Swedish work environmental board recommend hands free devices for employees, but very few workplaces offer them.
Almost everyone has a cell phone today in Sweden, and the country very likely saturated with mobile phone transmitters. The use of cellular and cordless telephones has increased dramatically during the past decade, and with it, concern over the health impacts of microwave exposure, and the brain is the main target organ.
Increased risk of brain tumours Since the latter half of the 1990s, cancer researchers at the University of Örebro, Sweden, have carried out six case-control studies: three on brain tumours, one on salivary gland tumours, one non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and one testicular cancer. Exposure level was assessed by self-administered questionnaires [9].
The results showed that the odds ration (OR) of acoustic neuroma (a non-malignant tumour of the auditory nerve) was 2.9 for analogue cellular phones, 1.5 for digital cellular phones and cordless phones. The corresponding OR for astrocytoma (a tumour of astrocyte nerve cell) grade III-IV was 1.7, 1.5 and 1.5. The ORs increased with latency period, with the highest estimates at >10 years from first use. Lower ORs were found for astrocytoma grade 1-II, and no association was found with salivary gland tumours, NHL or testicular cancer, although as association with NHL of T-cell type could not be ruled out.
In a further review of 18 studies on brain tumours [10], two cohort and 16 case-control, the results show that mobile phone use for more than 10 years give a consistent pattern of an increased risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma (a tumour that begins in a glial cell), and risk is highest for the side of the brain next to the mobile phone.
The increased risk of glioma with mobile phone use for more than ten years was confirmed by other scientists in a population case control study in three regions of Germany, the odds ratio was 2.2 [11].
Cell phones can cook eggs
New media
Saturday, May 12, 2007
Recently, New Media has reported a study showing the radiation from cell phones is so full of energy they can be used to cook eggs. In the experiment, researchers placed one egg in a porcelain cup (because it is easy to conduct heat), and put one cell phone on one side and another cell phone on the other. The researchers then called from one cell phone to another and kept the cell phones on after connecting.
During the first 15 minutes, nothing changed. After 25 minutes, however, the egg shell started to become hot and at 40 minutes, the surface of the egg became hard and bristled. Researchers found the protein in the egg had become solid although the egg yolk was still in liquid form. After 65 minutes, the whole egg was well cooked.
The study shows how scary cell phone radiation is. People should try to avoid use of cell phones. Although so far no one has proved the radiation from cell phones can cause something clinically significant. By the same token, there has been no one who can disprove the existence of such a risk.
Children should be forbidden from cell phone use because they still grow their brains and are particularly vulnerable to radiation.
Bee colonies affected by EMF
Tuesday, May 01, 2007
&..[An epidemiologist] laid the blame for the sudden demise (often within 72 hours) of entire bee colonies on the recent proliferation of electromagnetic waves (EMF). He cited the startling statistic that, at present, there are some 2.5 billion cell phone users around the world. While this (plus the explosive growth of cell phone towers) used to be the major concern, the problem has been significantly exacerbated by the recent introduction of satellite radio. Imagine being closeted in a confined environment filled with chain smokers; it would be impossible for you to get a breath of clean air. It is becoming equally difficult for you to avoid the now-measurable damage from EMF exposure&.[he]&commented that the constant electromagnetic background noise seems to disrupt intercellular communication within individual bees, such that many of them cannot find their way back to the hive&.a recent study conducted by [a] University &found that cell phone towers &could well be the cause behind the mysterious disappearance of butterflies, some insects (like bees), and birds&.bees are the modern-day counterpart of the canaries that miners used to carry with them as they descended into the mine shafts. If the birds died, it was an early warning of a buildup of toxic gases in the mine. When canaries die or bees disappear, we are being cautioned that we too are in immediate danger. It is time to listen to the message nature is telling us&.I shudder to think of what will become of humankind if we linger too long in stage two: no more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.

Limit usage of Cell phones
Tuesday, April 17, 2007
If you must pack a cell phone, treat it like a loaded pistol. Keep it turned off. Don't carry it near ovaries, testicles, or the heart. For partial protection, buy an antenna shield. Limit calls to one-minute, six to 10 minutes a month. Never fire off a cell phone with children anywhere in sight. A better bet is to facilitate the growth of organic telephone networks with lots of fiber. Instead of more microwave towers, we should be wiring up our cities with fiber-optic cables to provide Internet, fax, telephone, radio and television at very high quality, rather than saturating our cities with the microwave, radio wave and low frequency signals all the time. When it comes to cells, consciousness and cell phones, every call is collect. How can convenience count more than cancer? What is gained by being in constant contact with disembodied voices, while being "out of touch" with the friends and neighbors around us? Are we comfortable having our location traced by monitoring authorities? Unless we start voting with our wallets, consumer complacency could prove as species-limiting as corporate cynicism. Microwave frequencies are the same as those used in radar and your microwave oven. You wouldn't think of sticking your head in the microwave oven, but there is no hesitation to putting the cell phone to your ear.
Remote Home Portable Phones Cell phones are not the only phones to cause concern about health problems. Today's high-frequency cordless phones may emit a level of EM radiation similar to cell phones. For reasons of health and privacy, a growing number of scientists and other experts are dead set against these phones. They say a cancer risk is associated with signals that have a strong wattage and high frequency (short wavelength). First generation cordless phones operate at about 60 megahertz and the next ones ran at 900 megahertz--higher than 835MHz cell phones. The new 2.4 GHz is higher still and can transmit for several kilometers without fading. Microwave ovens operate at 2.45 GHz.
Cells are permanently damaged by cell phone frequencies
Dr. Peter Franch
Friday, March 23, 2007
Exquisitely sensitive to subtle electromagnetic harmonies, human brains and bodies as intricate as galaxies depend on tiny electrical impulses to conduct complex life-processes - including the ability to read, recall and respond to these words. Much like a boxer taking repeated blows to the head, rapidly pulsing cell phones signal permanent brain damage. Acting as antennas, our anatomies just as easily tune into spurious signals from radio and microwave transmissions. When it comes to cell phones, a worse frequency could not have been chosen for the human anatomy. The brain reaches peak absorption in the UHF bands, right where cellular telecommunications operate. A study by Dr. Peter Franch found unequivocally that "cells are permanently damaged by cellular phone frequencies." This cellular damage, Franch noted, is maximized at low dosage, and "inherited unchanged, from generation to generation." Franch found that the production of histamine, which triggers bronchial spasms, is nearly doubled after exposure to mobile phone transmissions. Cell phones also reduce the effectiveness of anti-asthmatic drugs, and retard recovery from illness. British military scientists have discovered that cell phone transmissions disrupt the brain sites for memory and learning, causing forgetfulness and sudden confusion. Other studies show that electromagnetic signals from cellular phones reduce the ability to concentrate, calculate and coordinate complicated activities such as driving a car.
Mobile telephones are arguably the most radiative appliance we have ever invented apart from the microwave oven and people are putting them by their heads--arguably the most sensitive part of the body. The pegged needle of a shrieking electromagnetic radiation (EMR) meter placed beside a connected cell phone still shows significant exposure 100 feet away. Cell phones emanate microwave radiation, and human brains may absorb up to 60 percent of that energy. Already there are at least 15,000 scientific reports on the subject. It has been discovered that small amounts of energy, when delivered in the right way, can have the same effects as a massive dose of chemicals. The most delicate fields of electromagnetic energy influence the complexity of living creatures. There are 66 epidemiological studies showing that electromagnetic radiation across the spectrum increase brain tumors in human populations. Two of those studies are for particular brain tumors from cell phones. Because cancer takes decades to develop, it will be another 10 or 20 years before "mobiles" manifest a bonanza in brain tumors. We're already seeing acute effects that are noticed within minutes of using a cell phone.

Cell Phones May Lead To Lower Fertility In Males CBS5, March 14, 2007 by Sue Kwon
Guys, the next time your cell phone rings, consider this. It could make you less fertile according to a study by Cleveland Clinic researchers.
At the Reproductive Research Center, Dr. Ashok Agarwal and his team observed 350 men undergoing fertility treatment.
"Those men who used a cell phone for more than 4 hours per day had the biggest decrease in properties in sperm especially the count, quality, and quantity of the sperm," Dr. Agarwal said. "They are significantly impaired in these men."
He announced the findings in the Fall, and plans to release a full report in a leading fertility journal "Fertility and Sterility" in the coming weeks.
It will explain how cell phones emit an electromagnetic wave when they communicate with the nearest cell tower.
Those waves could be heating up tissue in the testicals or altering hormones which impacts sperm production.
"It's possible an electromagnetic wave could cause damage to genomic material in the sperm or the DNA, causing damage and cell death," Agarwal said.

Mobile phone use 'linked to tumour' By Nic Fleming Last Updated: 2:28am GMT 26/01/2007
Long-term users of mobile phones are significantly more likely to develop a certain type of brain tumour on the side of the head where they hold their handsets, according to new research.
The results seem to suggest health risks in people who have regularly used mobiles for over 10 years A large-scale study found that those who had regularly used mobiles for longer than 10 years were almost 40 per cent more likely to develop nervous system tumours called gliomas near to where they hold their phones.
The new research, to be published later this year in the International Journal of Cancer, is the second study to suggest increased risks of specific types of brain tumours in regions close to where mobile phone emissions enter the head.
However, a number of other studies have found no increased health risks associated with mobile phone use.
Prof Lawrie Challis, the chairman of the government-funded Mobile Telecommunications Health Research (MTHR) programme, said last week that most research had shown that mobiles were safe in the short term but that there was a "hint of something" for longer-term users.
advertisement Prof Challis, who is negotiating funding for a long-term international study, said last night: "I agree with the authors that this is a hint that needs further exploration. It's further reason why a long-term study is necessary."
Louis Slesin, the editor of Microwave News, a US newsletter on radiation and health that reported the new study, said: "We now have two tumour types found among people who use mobiles for more than 10 years shown by two different research groups. That is compelling evidence."
Researchers from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland compared the mobile phone use of 1,521 people with gliomas with that of 3,301 people without the cancers.
Before separating out long-term users or looking at the different risks of developing tumours on the side where users held the phone, the scientists found no link between mobile use and gliomas.
However when they looked only at people who had used a mobile for 10 years or more, they found that they were 39 per cent more likely than average to get a glioma on the side of their head where they held their handset.
Prof Anssi Auvinen, an epidemiologist involved in the study, said: "It seems credible as it was after long-term exposure which makes sense in terms of the length of time it takes for tumours to develop and it is localised to the side of the head where the handset is held."
